Priest responsible for a parish. A priest in the middle of a crib may seem surprising to a purist, since, in fact, he is Christ's representative, and the latter has just been born ! But the people of Provence, the Provençaux, want him to be there because he counts as one of the village personalities.
Marcel Carbonel presents him in two different attitudes:
Priest with handkerchief, bareheaded, wiping his forehead with a big, red and white checked handkerchief and wearing a black cassock. (Lou moucadou - handkerchief).
Priest with Umbrella, carrying the traditional red umbrella - sign of respectability in Provence - a big, black hat and holding a gilt-edged prayer book in his hand.
