woman selling cheese
Peasant woman carrying a basket with cheeses – ‘brousse’ in one hand and in the other a little copper trumpet for attracting customers. La brousse is a fresh cheese made of ewes milk, or, more rarely, goats milk, moulded in pierced metal moulds. In Marseilles one can still hear the sellers cry "Les brousses du Rove, les brousses du Rove"! (The Rove being a small locality near Marseilles). On her white, cotton headdress she wears a wide-brimmed black hat to shade herself from the sun. She has put a big, white apron over her skirt.
