basket maker
Craftsman, sitting making a ‘banasto’ (large basket in use since time immemorial and found throughout Provence) using willow gathered in a bundle at his side. His wide-brimmed grey hat and billhook, used for cutting twigs, are placed next to him. Some identify him with ‘Vincent’ the hero in Frédéric Mistral's play, ‘Mireille’. Basketmaking constitutes a widely practised trade in Provence. Strawbaskets, hoopnets and baskets of all sizes are made using willow, reeds and cane.
